Support structure- Livestock Sector

Despite the fact that livestock sector contributes substantially in the overall rural economy. The contribution is largely underestimated. Himmotthan has taken a conscious decision to balance the use and promotion of exotic breeds and indigenous breeds across the livestock sector. Apart from this, strong efforts are being made to introduce a support structure that complements and supplements the efforts of the State support structure. Para-vets who are local to the region have been trained and supported to provide the last mile connectivity. The input-output centers take care of the most pressing and immediate requirements.

Decentralized Micro Milk Dairies

While addressing the livestock sector in the hills especially the interventions related to mulch animals, the organization concentrates on creating community institutions that can be linked to the milk supply chain at different stages, culminating in an outlet for sale of milk and milk products at the local level. The entire process of establishing a supply chain, positioning of the retail outlet, sale price of milk and value added products are managed by the participating community institutionalized into SHG and subsequently federated. Despite the many challenges associated at different stages of the milk value chain ending up in a sale outlet, Himmotthan has been able to establish 29 micro dairies across the 9 hill districts of Uttarakhand.

Currently 29 women federations led micro-dairies are in operation, with average annual turnover of Rs. 317 Lakh, of which 77% to 80% being paid back to farmers on annual basis

Promotion of Manufactured Livestock Feed

Fodder for the livestock has and remain one of the key challenges towards promoting livestock in the hill areas. The changing demographic pattern, stringent forest norms, few hands to manage livestock has pushed the livestock rearers towards alternative options to fodder. Manufactured feed is slowly gaining popularity in the hills. Major feed companies are supplying feed, the supply chain has been able to penetrate some of the remotest corners of Uttarakhand. The available feed from established companies especially in the hills is often not of the best grade. Himmotthan in partnership with ILRI have established cattle feed units in the hills, the manufactured livestock feed composition consists mainly of locally available agriculture produce. The livestock feed unit not only provides an assured buyer of agriculture raw material but also provides the community with nutritious feed. Till date 12 manufacturing livestock feed units have been established. The feed has been well accepted by the community as a viable supplementing and complementing source of nutrition for their livestock.
